Wayne Companies
History

Wayne's first truckThe Wayne Paving business began in the spring of 1980 - Like most businesses, it started out very small…with $2,000 cash, one single axle dump tuck, a borrowed trailer, and two previously owned pickup trucks. In order to begin paving, Wayne borrowed $5,000 from the Bank of New York to purchase an American Roads paver and his first roller.

In 1981, Wayne took the plunge into operating the business full-time. At that time, he employed 8 people.

In 1982, the business continued to grow just as it had in the previous years. It became necessary to mobilize the equipment, as the company's working range increased, so more equipment and vehicles were purchased. Payroll was also increased at this time.

Although the workload and income had continued to increase, it seemed as though profits were being eaten up by the rising cost of materials. It was at that time that Wayne began making plans for the production of his own materials. At the end of the 1983 season, Wayne made a down payment on the company's present Ceres, Pennsylvania location.

Business progressed in 1984, but a large portion of the profits were being spent on contract materials. Plans were then made to purchase a 60 ton/hour blacktop plant from ADM Corporation. The new plant also allowed the flexibility for the ever-increasing work load.

In 1985, the business income had continued to increase, and the Ceres property was being prepared for non-coal surface mining. The last was core tested for it's contents for gravel deposits, and engineers were hired to prepare permits for the PA DER.

Wayne and Lisa StephenA plant capable of crushing, screening, and washing the raw gravel deposits was purchased from L.B. Smith of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania in the spring of 1986. It was at that time that Lisa, Wayne's wife, joined him at the firm. In June of 1986, the final permits for large non-coal surface mining operation were obtained. Wayne Paving could now use it's own materials for commercial paving jobs. This also allowed Wayne Gravel Products to have a retail commodity available to the public market.

In April of 1987, the gravel portion of the business was incorporated as a separate entity. The paving division of the business joined the corporation in January of 1989.

Wayne Gravel Products, Inc. continued to expand it's annual sales volume. In 1993, the corporation obtained a bonding line, enabling them to bid government jobs.

In February of 1996, Lisa started her own company, Wayne Concrete. Wayne Concrete is a ready-mix concrete supplier for contracts, municipalities, and homeowners

In order to expand the sales and customer base of both Wayne Gravel Products and Wayne Concrete, they continually upgraded their manufacturing machinery and equipment. Today, operations include over 250 pieces of equipment and vehicles and employ nearly 100 people.

In 2004, Lisa opened up her first rental company in Coudersport, Pennsylvania and a second one in 2005 in Springville, New York. Wayne Rental offers a full line rental department offering a wide variety of equipment for rent.

Efficiency, service, diversification, and management are the keys to the business's success. Wayne Gravel Products, Inc., Wayne Concrete, and Wayne Rental have laid the groundwork to move successfully into the 21 century.
